It is a fact, dogs bark to communicate. Some breeds bark more than others but all dogs bark at times. It is when a dog barks excessively and without what seems to be a good reason that everyone gets annoyed. We all appreciate communication from our dogs but nobody wants a dog that barks and barks for no apparent reason.

There are quite a few reasons why a dog will bark. If your dog is bored because he stays in the house or the same yard all the time he may start barking to entertain himself. Dogs enjoy social stimulation and interacting with others. Try to incorporate more playtimes or go for more walks. This may stop your dog if he is barking excessively out of boredom.

Being overly nervous or scared can also prompt a dog to start barking excessively. Appropriately socialized dogs tend to be calmer and more relaxed around different people and in different situations but a dog that is not used to new things may start barking out of anxiety. Start socializing your dog by taking him to new and different places and into new situations. Give him praise and rewards when he is quiet and well behaved and soon he will not be so nervous as he will associate the pleasant treat with the situation rather than nervousness.

Dogs often bark to get your attention and this is one way to communicate. However, if you respond to this type of communication every time you are just teaching your dog to bark more. Attempt to get him to communicate in different ways and reinforce that behavior with praise and treats. He can rub on your leg if he wants to go out just as easy as he can bark at you!

Separation anxiety can make a dog start barking excessively. This is a problem for you as it is disturbing to neighbors and others and you are not even there. Try to get your dog past separation anxiety early on in his training when he is just a puppy. You can crate him whenever you leave and he will adjust to you being gone in his own space. Never make a big issue out of leaving your dog home alone but just slip out quietly. He will be less likely to act out until you get back if he doesn’t realize that you are gone.

Dogs also bark to offer the people they love protection. This is a good thing, unless it happens all the time when the mailman (or mail person!) brings you the mail. In that case you should spend some time training and socializing your dog. Introduce your dog to the mailman; if you are there he should not be feeling threatened. Offer him treats and praise for good behavior. Hopefully, he will get to know the mailman and not bark every single day. Do not try to stop the barking in the case of all people though as there may come a situation when you will be grateful for your dog’s protective bark.

A professional dog trainer can give you some tips and techniques to stop excessive barking but oftentimes just more socialization and more playtimes will curb the excessive barking. The one thing you should consider though is that your dog is usually barking for a reason and you should find out what that reason is. Then you can deal with the barking.

You will enjoy your dog more and others will also enjoy your dog more if he doesn’t bark excessively. Try to stop the negative behavior of excessive barking while your dog is a young puppy and when he is older you will know that if he is barking he has a good reason.
