What if I told you there were two things you could do that might eliminate forever the need to feed your yard? Would that get your attention? Good. So why don I share how easy it is to set your grass up so you can avoid hauling out the fertilizer spreader again.

That’s possible because if even as little as 5% of your lawn is sprinkled with white clover you can save on what you spend for fertilizer. Since just a smattering of clover can produce up to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of lawn. Which amounts to half all the annual nitrogen requirement. Add to that the idea of leaving the mulched clippings behind and you might be able to have a self sustaining feeding system.

So don’t you feel bad for thinking of clover as a common weed? Yet it was not always like that. No, it was not until later on in the 20th century that clover was relegated to the undesirable category by lawn fanatics.

Now as a member of the legume family some would say each clover plant is a little fertilizer factory. Capturing nitrogen from the air and storing it in the plant’s roots. Releasing it into the soil then as the roots die off.

Yet that isn’t all clover can do for your yard.

Clover is attractive to beneficial bees and parasitic wasps.

White clover can also add a verdant tone to your lawn even when the rains don’t come. And it will keep that green color even during extended dry spells.

The nitrogen produced by clover will not change the PH of soil like the chemically based fertilizers might. Not to mention that clover just smells better than a bag of fertilizer.

A lawn having a mix of grass and clover is also less susceptible to weeds as clover can help keep pesky weeds at bay by shading them out.

Homeowners supporting clover often enjoy lower water bills too. Because clover is on the drought resistant side. It also requires less mowing being low growing yet does tolerate being mowed regularly. Overall it’s a low maintenance grass alternative ideal for they busy homeowner who sometimes lacks time for yard work.

Another advantage? It’s a flexible plant. You don’t need the most fertile dirt bathed in full sun to have success with clover. In that it will take to poorer soil conditions while tolerating shade too.

Now the one disadvantage is a previously mentioned advantage. Clover attract bees. But if the clover is mowed often enough it won’t flower eliminating any concern you may have about being barefoot in the back yard and getting stung.

Another drawback is the fact it doesn’t stand up well to heavy foot traffic. But when nestled in among blades of grass that does you’ve got a reasonable compromise going.

Now you can buy bulk clover seed for seeding in the spring at most local garden centers. The rule of thumb is you’ll need an ounce of seed for every thousand square feet of yard you want to establish the clover in. You’ll likely see germination then within a week to 10 days after broadcasting the seed.

So why not do your bit for the environment by growing white clover in your lawn? It’s an excellent choice if you’d prefer to mow less, water less and feed less.
